Attention designers (of any stripe apparently) head downtown tonight and see what others in your field are up to. These events are held in cities around the world to provide a forum for designers to present and describe their work, and tonight’s meeting is being held at the Local 121.
Pecha Kucha Night, devised by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.
*Pecha kucha is the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation. That may be true in Japan but we all know that in English speaking countries it’s rhubarb umbrella.
7pm for schmoozing, 8pm presentations start, 121 Washington Street
Glad to see the turnout was good. Is there a date set yet for April?
Oh, Beth, the power of The Dose is beyond us all.
Sounds like a great cause on Tuesday. If can get there early enough, watch out, world. My darts game is dangerous even before the pints.
Stelllllaaaaa! Sorry. Had to do it. So what I hear you saying, Annie, is that posting an event on The Dose results in an enormous turnout. And I think you will shortly be able to satisfy your Guinness jones — Tuesday from 2 to 4 in the afternoon, the Wild Colonial will donate 100% of their proceeds from every Guinness sold to the RI Food Bank. And they never run out.
Update: this was pretty cool, even if I lost my shot at A.C. Newman tickets by attending. The place was PACKED. I was kidding about the schmoozing yesterday, but it did turn out to be too heavy for my taste (1 hr schmoozing, 1/2 hour presentation, 1 hour schmoozing, 1/2 hour presentation. Blah.) Good designs/ideas are going on in RI and it sounds like they’ve nearly got all 8 presenters for March and are already taking sign-ups for April. My only complaint is that Local 121 ran out of Guinness by 8:00. A bottle of Stella does not equal a pint of the black stuff, folks.
Sounds interesting! Perhaps a bit heavy on the schmoozing, by their itinerary, but still worthy of checking out.
