The National Organization For Marriage, a conservative group who’s all up in arms about the gay marriage thing, unveiled a new ad yesterday in the wake of same-sex Vermont couples now being able to put a ring on it:

I can’t decide whether my favorite part is. At first I thought it was the lightning backdrop, but on second thought it might be the actress playing the entitled California doctor (and the disclaimer that she’s not really a doctor.) Or possibly the man saying that the storm. is. coming. Or the use of the phrase rainbow coalition, because really, why should the gays be alone in using rainbow metaphors?
Discuss: what’s your favorite part?
My favorite is the blending of evangelical imagery (fire, brimstone) with wording used by the white power movement (the gathering storm).
I really don’t understand what any of these people -mean-. How does practicing medicine change if gay marriage is legal? I don’t remember being educated about -any- marriage issues in school, that all happened at home.
Personally, I think we should eliminate state-sanctioned -marriage- altogether, and -only- recognize ‘civil unions’ between any two consenting adults. I think we’re looking at the whole problem all wrong, if two people want to live together under contract and reap the economies of scale, merge finances to reduce risk and purchase property, I don’t see why they should be limited by the state. I think the state should recognize the ‘business end’ of these things, and not the ‘personal side’ of them. Two siblings who decide to live together and buy a house should be able to be treated just like a married couple is today, so should a grown child taking care of his elderly parent, or two friends who want to spend the rest of their lives together.
instead of trying to shoot for ‘legal gay marriage’, I think we should try for ‘marriage reform’, which would decouple the religious connotations from the legal system. Under this system, currently married folks would still be married, but the law would recognize them as ‘civilly united’. This way, the church could have their cake and we could eat it too.
I think that in a hundred years, the fact that the government defined and restricted an institution called ‘marriage’ that could only be between a man and a woman who weren’t related will seem as backward and draconian as witch trials do now. In the future, ‘marriage’ will be the domain of the church, and ‘civil unions’ will be recognized by the state as a method to share wealth, distribute risk, and stabilize society.
There is a storm brewing. A big gay storm. A big gay married storm. A big gay married storm that is raining down on you with gay hail stones that will dissolve your marriage and fornicate with your children! Run, run, run from the big gay storm.
Oye vey.
I like that their name is NOM. NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!
The California doctor who has to choose between her faith and her medicine. BITCH! You chose to be a doctor. Do you your job.
I’m seething at this commercial. SEETHING!!!!
I like how they never tell you what your lack of choice might be. Ever.
From the context I think that poor little girl, she will never have the choice to live in a country that oppresses people.
I cry for her, I really do…
No favorites. Too appalled by the fear-mongering and message trickery. I get the opposition to gay marriage and respect that this represents a big change, but this is so transparently phony that it makes me more solidly in favor of supporting same sex marriage. I’m so sick of “the world is coming to an end” nonsense, especially since it’s coming from a bunch of greedy, self-righteous bigots that brought us Iraq, Katrina and a Recession. Please just be quiet, will you?
