Providence has always had a small but devoted cluster of bands who have operated outside the typical two-piece noise and country-fried traditions of the town and found inspiration from across the pond; The Brother Kite, The Cold War, to name all two. The latest in a family tree that stretches all the way back to the L.U.V’s and the dying light of mid-90’s Providence rock would be White Honey, whose loose-limbed and chaotic jangle takes a slight turn from their previous incarnation as most of the Cold War by adding layers of Brian Jones(town Massacre) guitar shimmer and lovely piano and voice from formerly solo singer/songwriter Leah Carlson. White Honey plays with Aussie weirdos Cut Off Your Hands this Friday at, unfortunately, Jerky’s.
Also this weekend: The Wrong Reasons and Brown Bird at the Blackstone on Saturday, Mahi Mahi, Mad Happy and Cathy Cathodic at AS220 on Sunday.
Amazing show last night but the turnout was incredibly disappointing. The fact that Franz Ferdinand was in town probably had something to do with it but it was still unfortunate that these great bands played to fairly empty space. White Honey started on the mellow side but the second half of their set really showcased their songwriting skills and COYH played a blistering non-stop set.
Ooh, I like Cut Off Your Hands.
