Poe Birthday Celebration

edgar allan poe The skies should be appropriately gloomy and threatening later today when fans of Edgar Allan Poe (born January 19, 1809) gather to celebrate his life and works. The rain should hold off long enough for a speech honoring Poe, as well as some readings from “The Raven”, “The Telltale Heart” and “Masque of the Red Death”. (Poe famously courted Sarah Helen Whitman who lived just up the hill on Benefit Street. Her friends didn’t like him — he was weird and drank too much — and the wedding was called off.) The host for Sunday’s outdoor event is Carl Johnson who also coordinates the annual Lovecraftapalooza. There is a suggested donation of $10. Info at carocsan@live.com or call 356.1381.

2pm, Sunday, Roger Williams National Memorial Park between North Main and Canal Streets
