The Governor delivered his final State of the State address last night. The Projo covers it here. Something about tax cuts. Something about unions causing trouble. Something about how the governor and his appointees are the bee’s knees. This just about sums it up:
Reflecting an ideology that has persisted throughout his reign as governor, Carcieri urged all Rhode Islanders to fight through their current hardships, evoking what he said were words attributed to Abraham Lincoln:
“You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong,” Carcieri quoted. “You cannot help men and women permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”
Former President Ronald Reagan borrowed the same quote as well when he faced the 1992 Republican National Convention.
Those words, however, were never spoken by Lincoln, according to a book entitled “They Never Said It: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, and Misleading Attributions.”
