Time For A Third, Centrist Party

Independent Man Independent candidate for governor, Lincoln Chafee, had an interesting piece in The Sunday New York Times yesterday concerning Evan Bayh’s decision to leave the Senate. While empathizing with Bayh’s frustration he hints that perhaps this time of wheel-spinning partisanship might finally give birth to a third party on the national scene.

Echoing the feelings of many once enthusiastic Obama supporters Chafee quips,

So far, I’m sorry to say, he’s proving my assertion that Republicans lead in the wrong direction and Democrats are unable to lead in any direction at all.

He takes the President to task for not getting things done, for instance (and I take issue with this part) “. . . his failure to devise a stimulus bill that could win a single Republican vote in the House.” What in the history of the last year would ever lead us to believe that any Republican had any intention of voting with the Dems on anything, ever? There existed no bill he could have designed and Obama has already wasted valuable time on this bipartisan pipe dream.

But I hope Chafee is right — the existing parties need a real challenge. And I need a new party.

  1. Mangeek, I hope you’re not referring to the absurdly named Moderate Party. If these guys are ‘moderate,’ I’ll take the Drunken Lunatic Party, thanks.

  2. Green Party. We already have a corporatist centrist party called the Democrats.
