Halloween Playlist

Big thanks to Rick Massimo, music critic for the Providence Journal, for his inspiring Halloween music recommendations.  Mr. Massimo’s list hewed more closely to the holiday theme, whereas I took his suggestions for Rob Zombie’s ‘Superbeast’ and ‘Stigmata’ by Ministry, and ran with those tunes as my organizing principal. Here’s what goes well with these songs I think.

More Rob Zombie for one thing — ‘Living Dead Girl’ and ‘Dragula’.

Next, Witch (J Mascis on drums) and not just because of the name although that is nice. These guys smash out the head-bangiest rhythms ever, and the spectral vocals are mixed way back — no cookie-monster death metal growling here. ‘Seer’ is a doomy slugfest and just one of the best metal songs ever, no matter what time of the year. Also ‘Soul of Fire’.

Also Rammstein. I have a feeling this choice makes me hopelessly uncool, but that just can’t be helped I guess. Plus I don’t really know what he is singing about but it’s in German and he scares me. ‘Ich Will’ and ‘Feuer Frei’.

To lighten the load a little I added ‘Dead of Night’ by Depeche Mode and ‘I Eat Cannibals (Part 2)’ by Toto Coelo. And those are my recommendations. If it’s not long enough, just keep adding more Witch and Rob Zombie.
