The daffodils are blooming on Martha Street and we here in the Cottage Industries are looking forward to seeing your sunny faces amongst the flowers and in our multiple workshops, classes, events and other assorted and artsy (but not too artsy) happenings in our humble home in the Mercantile.
Take, for example, our extra special Spring Fever Open House coming up this Tuesday, May 3rd from 6-7pm! Learn more about the Printshop, Photo Studio and FabLab, meet our key members and shop regulars in this monthly mingling of minds and melding of artistic mediums.
At 7pm, come to AS220 Photo in the Mercantile for a very special Artist Talk with May Artist-in-Residence Huascar Robles! As an accomplished photographer, videographer, journalist, educator and community activist, Robles has taken on a number of projects documenting the cultural rituals and practices of the Latino and Puerto Rican community. While at AS220, he will be visiting local neighborhoods to document these spontaneous celebrations while helping AS220 engage the Latino community through photography and will speak on his current and past project and how photography has played an important role in his life and career. This event is absolutely FREE and guaranteed to be inspiring and insightful.

Intro to Letterpress (Session 1 of 3)
This course provides a quick, basic introduction to letterpress. Participants learn to ink the press, adjust pressure, adjust roller height, register and feed a sheet of paper, make an impression and then clean the press. Creating and using plastic plates in combination with metal movable type to create your own vision in letterpressed embossment.

Advanced Darkroom (Session 1 of 4)
This course is designed for experienced printers looking to further hone their printing skills to create professional quality prints suitable for gallery exhibitions, professional portfolios or commissioned work. We will use only fiber based paper in this class. We will cover; tweaking photo chemistry for better contrast control, toning, advanced burning and dodging, flashing, spotting and finishing.

Artist Talk with May Artist-in-Residence Huascar Robles
Join us for a very special conversation on documentary photography with May Aritst-in-Residence Huascar Robles! Robles is a well know photographer, journalist, videographer, educator and community activist in Puerto Rico and will be living at AS220 for the entire month to work on a photo project documenting the hidden rituals and cultural celebrations of Providence’s Puerto Rican and Latino Communities. This is sure to be an inspiring and enlightening talk for photographers and community minded artists, educators and activists.

Large Format Photography (Session 1 of 3)
A view camera works on the most basic camera principals and yields an impressive 4×5 (or larger) negative. These negatives can be contact printed or enlarged to epic proportions in the darkroom. The detail and precision from a view camera makes it the prefect camera for many artistic applications, and in this class, students will not only learn how to properly use a large format camera, but will have access to the AS220 Darkroom’s collection of cameras.

Chine Collé is a printing process in which a thin sheet of paper is simultaneously printed and mounted onto a sturdier backing sheet in a single pass through the press. This technique results with images of stunning detail and deep tones unattainable otherwise.

En este taller de dos semanas los estudiantes aprenderán aspectos básicos del cuarto oscuro. Desde mezclar químicos hasta aprender a ampliar fotos, los estudiantes obtendrán lecciones básicas de impresión de fotos tradicionales en blanco y negro. Proveeremos papel fotográfico, pero instamos a los estudiantes a traer su propio papel y negativos a imprimir.

Medium Format Photography (Session 1 of 2)
In two class sessions students will learn about the world of medium format photography and understand the difference between medium format films and experiment with Twin Lens Reflex cameras. Students will have access to our collection of Twin Lens Reflex cameras for the duration of the class, and will learn how to use the viewfinder, adjust shutter speeds and f-stop settings and learn how to compose photos in a square frame.

Alternative Photo Processes Vol. 3: Gum Bichromate (One Session Workshop)
Gum Bichromate printing is a fun and highly experimental process that produced the first color photographs. This alternative method involves adding a light sensitive solution to water based paints, allowing for the artist or photographer to paint onto their images for a unique and customized print. Gum Bichromate printing was popular around the turn of the century and were used to make color separations similar to modern newspaper and magazine photo printing.
