RIPTA: Funders, Keepers — Losers, Weepers

ripta-buttons-edit

Nothing like a little Saturday night button-making! One of these handcrafted, limited-edition babies could be yours – just be one of the first 35 passionate advocates to show up to Monday’s public RIPTA board meeting.

With no commitment yet from General Assembly leaders to fully fund RIPTA, we stand to to make a painful, inconvenient and unnecessary transformation to:

  • No service after 10pm – affecting routes 1, 11, 17, 19, 20, 22, 27, 28, 31, 33, 34, 42, 50, 52, 54, 55, 56, 57, 60, 66, 78, and 99. And no holiday service on any routes.
  • Completely canceling routes 8, 29, 32, 53, 73, 75, 80, and 203 and 90S.
  • No service some days on routes 13, 14, 34, 35, 52, 64, 76, 77, and 79.
  • Removing some bus stops or running fewer buses on routes 1, 13, 14, 19, 27, 28, 34, 57, 66 and Park & Ride.

How am I supposed to hit up the bars on weeknights? For more details check out the RIPTA Riders website.

  1. While I will confess I don’t know the specifics of each route in question, it seems to me that an economy so acutely dependent on anyone who actually has a job, such as Rhode Island is, should be investing in getting those people to their jobs and to any potential venue for their spending instead of making it harder to do so.
Bus service needs to viewed and respected as an essential component to the vast and ever-growing “underclass” that is the real economy of Rhode Island. We have seen how far pie in the sky real estate speculation will create a new economy here (not), so it is potentially shoot-our-foot material to constrain the bus service that allows the real, actual citizens of our city (and not the speculated and truly imagined wealthy “rain-the dollars” folk) to continue to be a working element of our sad and fragile economic existence.

  2. Wow, those buttons look really great. Who says you can’t support public transportation and not look fly at the same time? That dream is now a reality!!
