Screaming Females — a nouveau power trio out of New Brunswick, New Jersey — is one of three bands opening for Ceremony, Tuesday night at the Met. The band features Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and King Mike on bass. Ms. Paternoster has an eccentric vocal style — and actually a pretty eccentric style style — but the girl can shred. Spin Magazine already has her at 77 on the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
If Sleater-Kinney joined forces with J Mascis in a New Jersey basement to channel late Black Flag and early Smashing Pumpkins, they might come up with something approximating Paternoster’s maelstroms.
She looks to be about 12 years old. Tuesday night’s card: Ceremony, Screaming Females, Soul Control, Raindance. [I guess the rest of these bands will still be playing.]
