Thank You Netroots Nation

Netroots Nation 2012 By all accounts Netroots Nation 2012 was a big success. The conference wrapped up Saturday with a roster of progressive speakers, concluding with ‘Rebuild the Dream’ cofounder and former aide to President Obama, Van Jones, delivering the keynote speech. Brooklyn-based comedian, writer, and creator of the award-winning web series This Week in Blackness, Elon James White, kicked the evening off — “We don’t need facts, we need to work on some goddamn propaganda.”  Agreed.

Earlier in the day a panel discussed the current state of the economy and what progressives can do to combat austerity. Pulitzer-prize winning economist, New York Times columnist, and author of “End this Depression Now!,” Paul Krugman, expressed his frustration. (Sunday ProJo)

The current economic crisis has not been caused by a tsunami or some other act of God, he said. It’s been caused by an obsession with debt and inflation, neither of which is as dangerous as the Republicans and the Federal Reserve would have you believe, he said. Krugman, a New York Times columnist who is not afraid to criticize Mr. Obama, says America must spend its way out of economic malaise and only the federal government is capable of doing that. Individuals don’t have the means and corporations don’t have the will. But, with interest at historic lows, the government could create jobs in education and infrastructure that could put Americans back to work, he told his audience.

President Obama delivered a video address to the gathering. And Channel 12 reports an estimated $3.5 million has flowed into our local economy as a result of the conference. Next year, San Jose.
