Last week Providence’s favorite fledgling theater company announced plans to present the RI premiere of Duncan Macmillan’s critically acclaimed new drama LUNGS, October 14-27 2012, with a special press opening on Monday, October 15. LUNGS marks the Wilbury Group’s second production in the new performance space at the beautifully restored Butcher Block Mill, located at 25 Eagle Street, Providence.
Directed by Steve Kidd (resident actor at the Sandra Feinstein Gamm Theatre), LUNGS stars recurring Wilbury Group actor Jed Hancock- Brainerd (King Berenger in Exit the King at The Wilbury Group) and newcomer Rachel Dulude in her Wilbury Group debut as a young couple weighing the pros and cons of having a child, turning a seemingly simple premise into a hilarious and touching examination of the state of the world today.
“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to present this play to Providence and Rhode Island audiences,” said Artistic Director Josh Short. “I’ve been so impressed by the incredible combination of simplicity, humor and passion contained within Duncan’s writing. And I couldn’t be more excited to see it directed with the passion that an incredibly talented team such as Steve, Rachel, and Jed bring to it.”
“I love the multiple levels upon which this play works,” adds Director Steve Kidd. “The intimate and personal conversation between the two, the care they have for each other and the journey they take juxtaposed with the convention-breaking way in which the play travels through time relying on no set pieces, light changes, furniture or mime to tell the story.. only great, connected acting.”
LUNGS received a world premiere at Washington, D.C.’s Studio Theatre in September 2011, where The Washington Post called it “smart and stimulating.”The Helen Hayes Awards recently nominated LUNGS for a Charles MacArthur Award for Best New Play or Musical.
LUNGS synopsis:
In a time of global anxiety and political unrest, a young couple contemplates having a child. If they overthink it, they’ll never do it. But if they rush, it could be a disaster. This hilarious and touching examination of one couple’s decision by up and coming British playwright Duncan Macmillan begs the question, what will be the first to destruct the planet or the relationship?
