Architect Michael Graves At Brown

Michael Graves Poster (2.28) Noted post-modernist architect Michael Graves will give a lecture — “Images of a Grand Tour” — Thursday at Brown University. Graves is the 2012 Driehaus laureate and Providence Journal architecture critic David Brussat was none to pleased with his selection.

The prize is given annually (with $200,000) by the architecture school at the University of Notre Dame for contributions to classicism. But Graves is a postmodernist, and his classicism is about as obvious as entasis at the Parthenon. Which is to say it exists, but not clearly enough to make Graves worthy of a Driehaus.

(Go to Brussat’s ‘Architecture Here and There’ blog for this particular column in which, for one thing, ‘entasis’ is explained and illustrated.)

Free and open to the public, 5:30pm, Thursday, February 28, Salomon Hall, Room 101, Brown Green
