Congress Serves Up Pork With Disaster Relief

hurricane sandyFirst the bad news: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has just issued its outlook for the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season* and they are forecasting “an active or extremely active season this year.”

Now the good news: Last night on “All In with Chris Hayes” the host (Brown ’01 B.A. Philosophy) discussed the problems the Oklahoma congressional delegation is having justifying its request for FEMA aid in light of their recent voting record on same. However, Hayes actually agreed with one of Senator Coburn’s earlier complaints  — the Sandy aid package had been heavily larded with unrelated pork. The reason being that legislative gridlock in Washington is now so bad emergency aid bills are the only way anyone can get anything through because no cheap cialis one wants to look like they are voting against disaster relief.

So Congress is now literally lurching from crisis to crisis. But is an active hurricane season really the best way to stimulate bipartisanship and break up the legislative logjam?  I’m willing to give it a try — bring on a Cat 5 and let’s finally get to work!
