RI International Film Festival

(8.9) The 2015 Rhode Island International Film Festival kicks off with a gala celebration and screening Tuesday at PPAC. Symposiums, workshops, and screenings of 265 films from 54 countries will be held at venues across the state including in town at the Bell Street Chapel, AS220 Black Box, the Providence Public Library, and the Dark Lady among others. (Schedule here.)

This is a big deal; the festival is a qualifying event in two Oscar categories, short film and documentary short film. The weekend culminates next Sunday at the RISD Metcalf Auditorium when comedic genius (in the pantheon as far as I’m concerned) Julia Louis-Dreyfus presents a documentary about her father. Tickets for the 4:45pm screening are still available as of this writing — ten measly dollars.  Andy Smith writes in the ProJo,

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, star of HBO’s “Veep” (and, of course, “Seinfeld”), along with her husband, Brad Hall, and her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, are expected in Providence Sunday for a screening of “Generosity of Eye,” a film directed by Hall about William Louis-Dreyfus’ art collection and his decision to sell it to benefit the Harlem Children’s Zone.

That is a pretty damn interesting family. I wonder what their Thanksgivings are like. (Seen here is a piece from the collection by self-taught, African American artist Bill Traylor. More about the sale at ArtNet News.)

Smith also highlights the films with local connections including,

. . . “Hope City,” by David Angell, which looks at a homeless encampment in Providence, and “Help Us Find Sunil Tripathi,” about a Brown University student who disappeared and was briefly suspected of being one of the Boston Marathon bombers. (Tripathi’s body was ultimately found in the waters off India Point in Providence.)

Providence-based filmmaker Soren Sorensen contributes a film about his father’s wartime experiences, “My Father’s Vietnam,” which will have its world premiere at the festival.

Tickets $10 general admission to all screenings (opening night $15), RIIFF runs Tuesday, August 4 through Sunday, August 9th, 401.861.4555
