(8.8) This is a special year for local Scrabble-playing arts and anarchy lovers: The three-letter word FOO has finally been added to the Official Tournament and Club Word List by the North American Scrabble Players of America! (Def: n pl. FOOS, a name for temporary computer variables or files.) Around these parts? Foo means fun.
AS220’s annual summer block party has an indoor and an outdoor stage for music, as well as vendors, the Avenue Concept Art Car, the Unicorns, Ask Lovecraft, and the Mini Maker Faire, AND special guest emcee Reba Mitchell.
Recycle-A-Bike will be offering bike valet services. Cruise on down on two wheels without having to worry about someone messing with your ride.
Headlining the musical program are the noisy San Francisco pop-rockers Deerhoof (minimal gear, maximal volume, and surrealist banter). The supporting line-up includes many excellent local favorites. (Schedule here.)
Low Anthem, Death Vessel, Vio/Mire, Beta Motel, Bloodpheasant, Omnivore, Gymshorts, and the AS220 Youth Zukrewe

As usual, this year’s Foo Fest will take place in and around AS220’s longtime headquarters at 115 Empire St. There will be two music stages — one inside and one (the main stage) outside. Most of the food vendors, meanwhile, will be located outside, on Empire Street, along with the event’s usual complement of do-it-yourself craft booths, street performers and interactive art displays. In addition, AS220’s own in-house eatery, Foo(d), will be offering a special Foo Fest menu.
As for the Mini Maker Faire, it will be held next door, in the Trinity Rep-owned Pell Chafee Performance Center. Now in its seventh year, the event is designed to showcase creative start-ups, with a particular emphasis on design- and technology-related businesses.
$10 day of (kids 10 and under free), 1pm to 1am, Saturday, August 8, Foo Fest, AS220, Empire Street, (directions)
