Drop-In Chess Tuesdays

Head over to 186 Carpenter Street on Tuesdays for chess-playing and good-time-having.

Have you ever wanted to play chess but felt intimidated by the game? Wanted to learn but never had the time to ask? Or maybe you played once, but your uncle slammed you to the point of mortification beyond return? (Or maybe you just want to meet up and play a game or two with friends, but don’t know where to play in the thick of the winter.)

(What a lifesaver this must have been last winter for locals! Just to get out of the house and see some people . . . smart people.)

Program organizer Jaime Lowe started the program out of enlightened self-interest; she wanted to get back into the game and needed people to play with. And she wanted to share her love of the game. While this gathering is for adults, Lowe may consider creating another meeting for students.

Chess sets are provided, although you can probably bring your own, and the space is roomy and pleasant and air-conditioned. It’s BYOB and snacks. “Beginners are welcome and encouraged. Hyper competitive attitudes and pedantic speak are discouraged — this club is for learning and fun. Join us!”

(Lowe is a talented professional photographer — she did not take this picture.)

7pm to 9pm, Tuesdays, 186 Carpenter Street, (directions)
