Please Larry, Just ‘Lose Yourself’

We’re gonna need a montage! In their infinite wisdom, the Red Sox decided last Sunday that the video tribute to outgoing president Larry Lucchino should feature Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” All together now . . .

His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti

Well, if Larry Lucchino wants to remembered for spaghetti vomit, who am I to say. It was his big day.

But it was also Don Orsillo’s big day (last home game after 15 seasons) which only served to remind fans that the Red Sox are not done getting absolutely every little thing wrong in 2015. That any person with ears could conclude that the problem in the broadcast booth was play-by-play man Don Orsillo — as opposed to the lumpen Jerry Remy — is simply baffling. Everything about the “dynamic” between those two was revealed when ‘Father of the Year’ Remy had to take an extended leave of absence, and Orsillo got to work with Dennis Eckersley! What a treat that was. The level of discourse was smart and funny . . . and smart. Listeners got to hear keen insights and amazing behind-the-scenes anecdotes as opposed to, say, squabbles over the position of the Wally doll.

And in this regard, Red Sox ownership found yet another opportunity to make a boneheaded, tone-deaf decision. On Sunday, Orsillo’s farewell tribute was tucked into the 7th inning stretch and not aired on NESN. Compare: Lucchino’s pre-game ceremony which was televised on NESN.

What Lucchino’s new schedule bodes for Rhode Islanders is unclear. It may give him more time to plague us with his self-serving, get-rich schemes, or, dare we hope, Mr. Shady could just get lost!
