Trout Season Opens

Ocean State Tackle will be open all night tonight with the resident Zen masters dispensing bait and wisdom. For instance, did you know that trout fishing is a light tackle game?

Light tackle offers sensitivity and a more natural presentation of baits and lures. . . Opening day trout often feed voraciously but as time goes by the fish become naturalized and more wary. The use of light line requires smaller terminal tackle to create the best presentation.

And you’re gonna need your Gulp Trout Dough and Gulp Salmon Eggs and small and shiny fishing lures. Here is part of the Ocean State trout stocking update for the 2016 season.

New Trout Stocking locations on the Ten Mile River, marked by white trout fishing signs, include 1) at the intersection of 114A and Hunts Mill Road and 2) just below the John Hunt House at 65 Hunts Mill Road. Visit DEM’s website for a complete list of stocked waters. In addition to the three new locations, J.L. Curran Reservoir in Cranston has reopened and will be stocked. Lake Tiogue in Coventry will not be stocked this year due to low water issues.

Other trout locations near Providence are Slater Park Pond in Pawtucket (kids only for first two days of trout season) and Willett Pond in East Providence.

For more about the hatcheries producing the trout stock go to the ProJo. Go to the DEM for your freshwater fishing license.

So if you wake up in the middle of the night and realize you are completely out of trout dough, head over to Ocean State Tackle.

Open all night Friday, April 8, and through Saturday, Ocean State Tackle, 430 Branch Avenue, (401)749.3474, (directions)
