Things to do Thursday. First check out ‘Furniture Music’ in the Grand Gallery at the RISD Museum, Thursday, May 19, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. (Thursday is Gallery Night Providence and admission to the museum is free. There are other events on tap for Thursday at the museum.)
James Falzone, one of the RISD Museum’s 2016 Artist Fellows, presents a program of music in recognition of the 150th birthday of 19th century French composer Eric Satie. Satie is widely known for solo piano pieces and this performance presents some of his conceptual works, arranged for an ensemble of piano, flute, and strings. ‘Furniture Music’ is thought of as an important forerunner to ambient music. Drop in for any portion of this hour-long delightful and eccentric program.
From there you can head over to the opening reception for the RISD Furniture Senior Exhibition at Woods-Gerry, 6pm to 7:30pm on Thursday, May 19. Seen here is a piece from last year’s exhibition. Furniture show runs through Tuesday, May 24th, at Woods-Gerry Gallery, 62 Prospect Street.
