‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ MotB

(6.23) It’s all about BB-8 as far as I’m concerned. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ — starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac — is this week’s installment of Movies on the Block.

Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.

Manohla Dargis of the NYT breathed a sigh of relief that this new Star Wars was actually good.

It has the usual toy-store-ready gizmos and critters, but it also has appealingly imperfect men and women whose blunders and victories, decency and goofiness remind you that a pop mythology like “Star Wars” needs more than old gods to sustain it.

Rain date Friday. Rated PG-13.  Running time 2 hours, 15 minutes. Next week: ‘Snow White.’

Free, 8:25pm, Thursday, June 23, Grant’s Block, 260 Westminster Street at Union, (directions)
