‘Police Academy’ MotB

(9.8) This week’s installment of Movies on the Block is one of Bill Clinton’s favorite movies, ‘Police Academy.’ We learned this fact last summer while watching the Democratic National Convention when both Bill and Chelsea Clinton, in their laborious retellings of family anecdotes, shared with the nation that an actual president of the United States had at one time forced his daughter to binge-watch the entire six-movie ‘Police Academy’ franchise. The whole thing. (And I would still be saying this if she was a guy, by the way.) Franchise star Steve Guttenberg already knew Bill was a fan, and following the inevitable landslide of snide comments, decided to speak out on the role that dopey, mindless entertainment can play in the lives of stressed-out Americans. When I was filming “Home for the Holidays,” I had an opportunity to visit the White House and see Bill. One of the stories he told, was that he had had a challenging few days, and turned to the six-movie package of “Police Academy” with his daughter Chelsea. It was a distraction of the highest order.
Now, I’ve admired his special ability to be mindful, to be present. His attention is elevated. He is the top of the ladder, and authentic. It was thrilling to hear him say it, but the meaningful takeaway was the importance of rest, rejuvenation and recreation for all of us, in or out of the White House.

Fair enough . . . but all six movies?! At any rate, it’s a good choice for an outdoor movie. Eat, drink, yell at the screen.

Rated R. Running time: 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Next week the 2010 version of “True Grit” which I liked a lot.

Police Academy, 7:06pm, Thursday, September 8, Grant’s Block, 260 Westminster at Union Street, (directions)
