(7.13) The West Broadway Neighborhood Association (WBNA) will be celebrating ‘Bocce and Chess in the Park’ this Thursday at 4pm with a ribbon-cutting for the new bocce courts and chess tables at the Dexter Training Ground. (Facebook event page.) Join neighbors, elected officials, and the Jeffrey Family for a “throw of the first ball.”
Celebration starts at 4pm before the kickoff performance of West Side Thursdays, WBNA’s summer concert series. After a brief ceremony, expert chess player Russ Jeffrey will lead a Chess Program where kids can learn how to play chess and win prizes for solving chess problems.
In this week before the ribbon cutting, chess tables made by The Steel Yard will be installed near the bocce courts along with an interpretive panel by Taylor Polites on the history of bocce at the park, bocce rules and how to play, and background on Gilda & Bob Jeffrey, the neighbors in whose honor this new park addition has been built.
4:30pm — Kids Chess Program.
5:30pm to 7pm — After the event, stay at the park to enjoy the first performance of West Side Thursdays series along with other family-friendly activities and the Armory Farmer’s Market and Beer Garden.
Set against the backdrop of the Armory Farmers Market, West Side Thursdays is a free and family-friendly destination summer event on the west side that takes place over three Thursdays in July. These public performances bring neighbors together while showcasing local artists and musicians, and feature activities for kids as well as the Armory Farmer’s Market Beer Garden by Laughing Gorilla Catering and Revival Brewing Company.
The band this week is Karma Rocket!
