‘Dumb And Dumber’ — Movies On The Block

(8.10) This week’s installment of Movies on the Block is the 1994 Farrelly Brothers buddy epic, “Dumb and Dumber,” starring Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, and the Big Blue Bug. (Facebook event page.)

Harry and Lloyd are two good friends who happen to be really stupid. The duo set out on a cross country trip from Providence to Aspen, Colorado to return a briefcase full of money to its rightful owner, a beautiful woman named Mary Swanson. After a trip of one mishap after another, the duo eventually make it to Aspen. But the two soon realize that Mary and her briefcase are the least of their problems.

Look . . . “My Dinner With Andre” this is not. But the Farrelly brothers (who wrote and directed the movie) are from Rhode Island and return often to share their good fortune. They film locally whenever possible, hire local actors, and they charted new territory by casting actors with intellectual disabilities, as well as a quadriplegic friend who appeared in almost all their movies until his death three years ago. And the Cowsills are on the soundtrack. You don’t get more Rhode Island than that.

Rated PG-13. (Actually, it’s ideal for age 13.) Running time: 107 minutes.

Free, 7:52pm, Thursday, August 10, Grant’s Block, 260 Westminster Street, (directions)
