Rachel Blumberg Animation — PADFF

(11.4) Rachel Blumberg is one of those annoying people who is both a talented musician and a gifted visual artist . . . and a really nice person. (I’ve had to get by just being a really nice person.) As a drummer Blumberg has performed with Death Vessel, the Decembrists, Bright Eyes, and other notable contemporary musicians who tend to get called ‘indie.’ And it’s not just drums — Blumberg also plays the piano, ukelele, and banjo and other stringed instruments. But it is her work as an animator that we celebrate now.

From the Providence Art & Design Film Festival (PADFF) profile:

As a visual artist she makes paintings, drawings, found object pieces and other work inspired by dream land, folklore, history, nature, and people’s stories. She shows regularly as well as creating many commissioned works. As an animator/filmmaker she creates stop motion shorts and music videos using cut paper, found objects, paintings, drawings, and people, and has made music videos for the likes of Gillian Welch, Iron & Wine, and Tom Hagerman (Devotchka).

On Saturday, Blumberg’s work will appear in the Providence Art & Design Film Festival ‘Short Films’ program starting at noon, and a Q&A with Blumberg will follow the screening. There are six films altogether, the longest of which is 21 minutes.

Shorts Program, noon, Saturday, November 4, Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main Street, (directions)
