Jenkins Gets Oscar Nomination!

Let’s bring that Oscar home to Providence! Richard Jenkins began his acting career with Trinity Rep in the seventies, ultimately becoming its artistic director, before focusing on television and movies. He returned a few years ago to direct “Oliver!” when he and his choreographer wife, Sharon, received Trinity’s Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts — they now reside in Providence. So Richard Jenkins is our guy at the Oscars! This sure makes things easier because Jenkins’ category includes four other great actors in some very entertaining movies.

Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”
Woody Harrelson, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”
Christopher Plummer, “All the Money in the World”
Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

That is one tough field, but Jenkins is the class of the field. For one thing, Jenkins has built up an astounding resumé, meaning he has worked at one time or another with almost every other actor and director in Hollywood, making himself respected and beloved. Here’s just a snippet of his television and film work: Six Feet Under, Olive Kitteridge (won Emmy), Hannah and Her Sisters, Wolf, Snow Falling on CedarsSomething About Mary, and The Visitor for which he received a ‘Best Actor’ Oscar nod in 2009.

Plummer has been around even longer, but has not always played the game, once referring to his most famous movie as “The Sound of Mucus.” But he’s super old and that was one helluva trick he pulled off this year in All the Money in the World. And Sam Rockwell has been a personal favorite of mine for a while.

Here in Providence? The Oscar goes to Richard Jenkins!
