We have lost many great, smaller, music clubs over recent years — the places where those crazy nights of closeup music happen — so I am happy to announce some good news for a change. The former Century Lounge (also Fatt Squirrel) on Chestnut Street is being renovated and will soon be reopening as Askew, a bistro and entertainment venue.
I barged in the other day and spoke with owner Windsong Hadley as contractors wired, hammered, and painted all around. Here is what I have discovered: They hope to open by the end of April; they will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Askew refers to food served on skewers which will be a specialty of the menu; the club will feature the work of local artists on the walls; and they will be booking some comedy as well as musicians and bands. That low stage is still where I remember it.
When it comes to music, Hadley knows what she’s doing; she and partner John Difruscio managed Firehouse 13 for three years beginning in 2014, and she does booking over at Alchemy. Windsong says the emphasis at Askew will be on booking local bands (although I am already excited about Electric Six coming this summer). Check out the photos at their Facebook page.
Entrance to the club is down the stairs at 150 Chestnut Street, the same building which houses ArtProv Gallery. I have blanked out the old Fatt Squirrel signs because I really did not like those ever.
Will there be a dance floor..?
A Lot of dancers in the area..be a pity…to neglect this crowd that supports and dances to live music
This is awesome, would be honored to rock the stage in the near future!
Thank you so much Beth! You’re welcome to “barge” in whenever you want :-) We are hoping to be open in a few short weeks!!! We are looking forward to working with the many talented, local artists, comedians, authors and musicians, as well as working with our community through various charities & events. The renowned John Difruscio will be booking/hosting many wonderful events, though I would like to note that the Electric Six show will be hosted at our sister venue, Alchemy at 71 Richmond Street, Providence. Thank you again for such a wonderful article & promoting small businesses in our community. Much Love!
