It is easy to miss the Gelman Student Exhibitions Gallery in the Chace Center of the RISD Museum. It’s on the 2nd floor and off the beaten path. Seen here is ‘Cloister Chair’ by Taylor Gray.
Now through April 28th the gallery will be hosting The Chair Show featuring . . . chairs! There are fabric chairs, metal chairs, and ceramic chairs. There are chairs made of fiberglass, white oak, black walnut, maple, and ash. There are paintings of chairs, photographs of chairs, and a life guard chair qua scratching post for your cat. And I very much liked a digital embroidery and stainless steel piece called ‘Chair Garden’ by Marc Librizzi (see below).
Curated by Hannah Bartlett (BFA FD ’19) and Raina Wellman (BFA GD ’19).
(The shortest way to the Gelman Gallery is by using the North Main Street entrance. It is a quick flight up from behind the admissions desk. There are building renovations going on over on the Benefit Street side. The admissions desk is up and running, as is the Pearl Café, but access to the Modern and Contemporary Gallery and Pendelton House from there requires a detour.)
Tuesday – Sunday: 10am to 5pm.
Admission is free every Sunday (10am to 5pm) and on the third Thursday evening of each month (5pm to 9pm).
