Chicks Starting To Hatch!

Glad I checked the nesting box today. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island (ASRI) is pretty excited:

Happy Hatch Day! The Providence Peregrine clutch has begun to hatch! Tune in and watch as the eyases emerge.

When I first checked the peregrine webcam, one parent was just sitting there covering eggs and chicks, but suddenly there was a flurry of activity when the other parent flew in with an unidentified bird carcass (which frankly looked pretty well picked over already, like when you open the bag of donuts on the way home). More pix below.

So two eggs have hatched with two to go. Be patient — this is not an easy process. The ASRI added this note:

The first chick started hatching up to three days ago! Egg hatching is a strenuous activity that consists mostly of resting time. It is also the first survival test of each bird’s life, thus the chicks do not receive any assistance from their parents.

In the beginning of the year, the ASRI noted that some upgrading of the video system had taken place, and it shows, particularly when you set the image to full screen. It’s sharp and clear, and I’m pretty sure we are now a little closer to the action. These images are all screen grabs and the quality is much better than in the past. Well done people.

And you can help support this project at the “Party for the Peregrines” coming up Friday at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center. You don’t have to go, just buy a ticket.
