Fane Tower Hearing At Wexford Bldg.

[Update: The Commission approved the tower. The fight will continue in the courts. Donate at Building Bridges.]

An important public meeting of the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission takes place this Wednesday, September 25, and the Fane Organization’s tower is on the agenda.

Fane is seeking final design approval and four zoning waivers.

Look how open and above-board the Commission is about the Fane Tower. Check out their homepage. The drop-down menu under “projects”? They’ve got South Street Landing, and Parcel 6 . . . even the Shack! But nothing about Parcel 42, Fane, or Hope Point. I don’t know if the entire commission has been co-opted by Senate President Dom Ruggerio, but we can’t give up.

Mr. Fane seems to be operating under the assumption that the commissioners are all Ruggerio’s pliable toadies and that he does not actually have to cooperate with them. We reported earlier this month about whether financing problems have developed for the Fane company which has been missing deadlines and trying to restructure agreed-upon terms. I sure would like to hear what the commission has to say about that.

Litigation update: Opponents to the tower have filed a complaint; opposing briefs are due on October 23. It is hoped that the case will be resolved in superior court by year end. If appealed, the case would proceed to the state supreme court. Donate to this effort at Building Bridges.)

Wednesday’s meeting to be held in different location: Go to the Wexford Building at 225 Dyer Street.

The Providence Preservation Society will be there and they urge everyone to voice their opposition to this grossly inappropriate tower on Parcel 42 and reconfigured P4 (public park land).

If you cannot attend, send comments to the Commission to Amber Ilcisko (

5 pm, Wednesday, September 25, District Hall, 225 Dyer Street, (directions)
