Columbus Day Parade

(10.13) Atwells Avenue is the place to be if you like parades and food and music. Otherwise you may want to avoid the area.

On Sunday, October 13th the annual Columbus Day Parade kicks off at 11am. This year’s parade will feature marching bands, dozens of floats, and civic groups. The parade route is from Harris Avenue to Dean Street along Atwells Avenue. This area will be closed during the time of the parade.

The sculpture hanging from the arch at the east end of Atwells is a pine cone, whence come the delicious pine nuts, or pignoli, you use in pesto. About 20 species of pine produce seeds large enough to be worth harvesting; in other pines, the seeds are also edible, but are too small to be of notable value as a human food. (See also: squirrels.)
