Triggs Golf Course

Perfect day for a round of golf. And yes, there is a public, 18-hole, par 72, golf course right here in Providence. Located in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, way out on Chalkstone Avenue, Triggs Memorial Golf Course has a practice range, learning center, carts, and a clubhouse bar and grill.

Seen here, with flag flapping, is the pin at the 9th hole. At 331-402 yards depending on your tees, I’m guessing it’s a par four. What I do know is that this green was in perfect condition today . . . in January. Triggs is a Donald Ross designed course. This Scottish-born golfer designed dozens of courses here and in Canada, including the Agawam, the Rhode Island Country Club, and Wannamoisett.

Winter golfing hours are 8am to dusk, weather permitting. I spoke with the genial Jim Ford, Triggs’s outside supervisor, and he suggested clicking on the web cam, “if you see carts, we’re open.” The Triggs website also suggests a peak at the web cam: “If there is no snow and ice on putting green then we will be open for golf.” Or call. But if the weather is like today? Just go! Reserve a tee time on line or check in at the Pro Shop.

Lessons are available.

Amazingly enough, there is another (9-hole) course very nearby. Button Hole Short Course and Teaching Center is closed for the season. We’ll have more on that later.
