(2.13) Chazan Gallery will be holding an opening reception Thursday for “Intercalary Event 2020.” The exhibition runs through March 4th.
This February 2020, the artists Katie Bullock, Robert Horton, Sean Salstrom and Jocelyne Prince invite intercalary events/objects into the Chazan Gallery, Hay Library’s Wills Reading Room, (Brown University) and Ladd Observatory. The process the artists engage is one of letting inquiry guide new paths; by inserting surprising elements into a narrative of objectivity and data. Observation and systems of observation are embraced but give way to a looser idea of “things related to science”.
Seen here is a photograph taken by Robert Horton, manager of astronomy laboratories and the Ladd Observatory. Horton has been photographing the night sky for over 40 years as well as grinding and polishing optics for his custom telescopes, some of which have won first place at astronomy conferences such as Stellafane, an annual gathering of telescope makers and stargazers.
Satellite venues include the Ladd Observatory and the Willis Reading Room at Brown University’s John Hay Library.
Opening reception, 5pm to 7pm, Thursday, February 13, Chazan Gallery, 228 Angell Street, (directions)
