The first Postmaster General of the United States was Benjamin Franklin. He had already served for several years as postmaster for Philadelphia when he was named deputy postmaster-general of the British Colonies. The final Postmaster General of the United States will be Louis DeJoy whose relevant experience is as follows:
He has given more than $2 million to the Trump campaign or Republican causes since 2016, according to the Federal Election Commission, including a $210,600 contribution to the Trump Victory Fund on Feb. 19. He has given more than $650,000 to the Trump Victory Fund and more than $1 million to the RNC.
His lack of experience doesn’t matter really. His assignment is: Be mean to Jeff Bezos and destroy the Postal Service prior to the election. From The New York Times:
“GOP is naming a political operative with no USPS experience as the Postmaster General right before an election where millions of people will try to vote by mail to save their own lives,” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, said Thursday on Twitter. “They are eroding our democracy and crushing our public institutions before our very eyes.”
Mr. Bezos, of course, committed the unforgivable sin of being richer than the president . . . and owning The Washington Post and Amazon.
One more thing: Mrs. DeJoy has been given the ambassadorship to Canada. Her credentials are exactly those of her husband.
If this administration does to the USPS what it has done to the Justice Department and the C.D.C. we are in serious trouble . . . oh right.
So do your part: Buy some stamps! You know how this quarantine is supposed to be changing us forever? Well, the USPS actually sells Forever stamps! Put down the sour dough and write someone a letter.
