Community Libraries Now Open

The Providence Community Library (PCL) will be reopening its nine neighborhood locations this Wednesday, operating on the summer schedule until September 4, with slightly reduced hours and mid-day closings which allow for extra cleaning of surfaces and safe quarantining of returned items. Patrons may make brief visits, browse and borrow materials and pick up reserved items and materials for the Summer Reading Program.

There will be no seating in the library but some chairs and tables will be provided outdoors under a canopy. Computers will be available later in the summer, once library spaces are fitted with custom plexi screens; in the meantime, people are free to access library WiFi on their own devices. Print, copy and fax services are available.

The need to maintain safe, social distancing means there is a new-look Summer Reading Program, based on digital resources and Passport to Summer Learning Takeaway Bags. The Inside-Out Summer program, created by PVD Young Makers and Providence Community Library for middle and high school grades, also offers web-based design and business challenges, supplemented by weekly Workshop Bags filled with materials.  Both the Takeaway bags and the Workshop bags can be picked up from PCL locations or from Providence Public Library. Virtual programming on PCL’s YouTube channel will continue through the summer.
