401 Gives

Every year Rhode Islanders celebrate their area code on the first day of April in an orgy of giving, helping to fund some of the smaller local entities through the 401Gives program (check out their leader board). Often these organizations have matching funds lined up thus increasing the impact of your gift today.

As of this writing the Rhode Island Community Food Bank was very much in the running. This is certainly the year to support this worthy agency.

We are partial to the Steel Yard with its studios and unique events like the annual Iron Pour. Another of our faves is the non-profit community arts organization AS220 with its newly improved restaurant and stage! They have many youth programs as well.

Don’t forget the Providence Public Library. And Common Cause is raising money for its education fund.

Check out the Providence Preservation Society where a group of trustees have donated funds for a 1:1 community match up to $2,000. (Donate between now and 5:59 am on Friday, April 2.) This is the second year for their “five-week training course in historic window restoration for under- and unemployed Rhode Islanders.”

And we have to mention WaterFire Providence who took a huge hit last summer for obvious reasons. (Complete disclosure: Dose creator and manager Tim works at WaterFire. Neither he nor anyone else from the organization requested this mention.)
