New Mural At Open Door Health

A new mural brightens the side of the Open Door Health clinic while honoring the people important to the artist and the community.

“Love is a Many Gendered Thing” by renowned queer artist Brian Kenny is a tribute to the the trans and queer communities served by Open Door Health.

Interlaced throughout this complex work, done in Kenny’s signature line drawing style, are the faces of real people, members of the LGTBQ+ community both here in Providence and around the world, as well as symbols representing both broad themes and local flavors.

Curious about what this all means? Public art non-profit The Avenue Concept has posted “Faces in the Crowd: The People and Symbols in Brian Kenny’s Mural,” where you can educate yourself.

Open Door Health offers primary and sexual health care to LGBTQ+ to Rhode Islanders and the community at large. Call (401) 648-4700 during clinic hours.

ODH, 7 Central Street, (directions)

Everything from mermen and the state flower are woven around influential LGBTQ+ community members.

And apparently you don’t even have to walk through the door. A curbside consultation was taking place as I took photos.
