MLK Day — Stop Election Subversion

We can all honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. by contacting our congressional delegation today, and every day, until the cornerstone of our democracy has federal protection. There is really only one issue before Congress right now — election subversion. It appears from recent remarks that the President now understands this.

And the state legislative bodies continue to change the law not as to who can vote, but who gets to count the vote — count the vote. Count the vote! It’s about election subversion, not just whether or not people get to vote. Who counts the vote? That’s what this is about. That’s what makes this so different than anything else we’ve ever done.

Unfortunately, the proposed legislation may not even cover this, and we may not be able to fix the problem before November. From “How the Voting rights Bills Miss the Target on Election subversion” (NYT 1.12.22):

Neither of the voting rights bills, nor the emerging bipartisan effort to reform the Electoral Count Act, is sure to close off some of the most probable avenues for election subversion.

This is an emergency. Actor/musician Steve van Zandt has been spreading the alarm for months now. How is it that nobody in Congress sees this?

Seen here is a portrait by John Woodrow Wilson from the RISD Museum collections. This “hard and soft ground etching, aquatint with chine colle on Rives BFK Mulberry paper” was executed by the Massachusetts artist in 2002. Wilson’s most famous work is the bronze bust of Martin Luther King Jr. that stands in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington.

  1. Done! I also called Joe Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema, and Chuck Schumer. Why any democrat would hesitate to stand up for basic voting rights is beyond me…
