Virtual Screening Followed By Q&A

(3.19) Saturday at 6pm, via Zoom, AS220 will be presenting the award-winning documentary Summer of Soul, with a special post-film Q&A session featuring Summer of Soul film editor Joshua L. Pearson.

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was largely forgotten–until now.

Tickets are just $20, and all proceeds support AS220. Attendees will also receive a special gift from AS220.

Rated PG. Running time: one hour, 57 minutes. Read Wesley Morris’s review here.

Summer of Soul has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category and I think they have a great chance of winning. And how remarkable is Questlove who made all the right choices in this, his directing debut?

I happen to be a big fan of good editing, and Mr. Pearson hits this one  out of the park.

Keep your eyes out for Mayor John Lindsay who strolls through in all his grooviness. Sad to realize that the Republican party used to include these open-minded, moderate types. Pity.

John Lindsey may have been groovy but his welfare commissioner ruined some plessaant racially integrated neighborhoods, including mine. The commissioner bought up good apartment buildings with moderate rents (charging less than what the welfare houing allowance would pay). Then he used various tactics to drive out the current tenants so he could move in welfare tenants and have welfare pay the higher rents. Of course he neglected maintenance in what had been well maintained buildings.
