Spring Tree Giveaway Starts

The Arbor Day Foundation is partnering with the state to provide residents with trees for planting strategically around your home for environmental impact and energy savings. And beauty.

Registration opens on Friday, March 25, and is required to reserve a tree. Recipients must be Rhode Island residents. Supplies go fast, so early registration is recommended.

The free trees will be approximately four to six feet tall and come in three-gallon containers. These trees are traveling size and will fit in most cars for you to take home and plant yourself.

Go here to register.

Trees can be picked up during one of the following pick-up events, Saturdays between 9am to noon:

  • April 23, Richmond Elementary School in Richmond.
  • April 30, Monsignor Gadoury School in Woonsocket.
  • May 7, Colt State Park in Bristol.
  • May 14, RI Tree Council in Johnston.

From WPRI:

The DEM has not yet announced which tree species it will be offering, but did specify that all of the trees will be four-to-six feet tall and will come in three-gallon containers.

Seen here is our state tree, the swamp red maple, Acer rubrum. The foliage is green. The red flowers open in early April. Red maples are tolerant of a wide range of conditions (keep away from horses).
