And they’re doing that golden trout thing again. Saturday marks the beginning of Trout Fishing Season so things will be hopping over at Ocean State Tackle starting Friday (noon to 6pm). Dave Henault has been stocking up on sea worms, green crabs, garlic trout bait (everyone loves garlic) and Berkley floating eggs.
Dave’s yellow lab Sukha returns and will be joined this year by Prana, a 5-month old black lab, although maybe not right away. Prana “needs to be trained to get acclimated with people . . . he is still a puppy.” (Dave is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist: Sukha is Sanskrit for “happiness” and Prana means “breath, or life force.”)
The DEM sure is happy to be getting back to normal again.
The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is pleased to announce that Opening Day of trout season is back to its regular, pre-COVID schedule, with over 100 freshwater locations stocked, including the children’s ponds, on Saturday, April 9, 2022. DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) has stocked more than 60,000 hatchery-raised rainbow, brook, golden rainbow, and brown trout in waterways across the state. In addition, 4,000 sebago salmon will be stocked statewide.
Go for the Gold!
Anglers who catch a golden rainbow trout from Opening Day, to May 8 will be eligible to receive a golden trout pin. Simply take a picture and send it to dem.fishri@dem.ri.gov. The golden trout pin contest will be limited to the first three weeks after Opening Day. Anglers’ submissions need to be received no later than May 9 to be eligible for the pin.
