The Upside Down?

It’s where the Benny’s used to be. The final episode of the new season of “Stranger Things” was released today, and roughly 15 minutes into ‘The Piggyback’ you will see this young man taking target practice at dummies in the dark. (Don’t worry, no spoilers. I have no idea what’s going on. I don’t even know his name.)

So what is this oddball Rhode Island reference doing here? The show takes place in Hawkins, Indiana, and we do have a Hawkins Street and an Indiana Avenue in Providence. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Apparently the Duffer brothers are fans of H.P. Lovecraft . . . plus, we are up to our elbows in duffers here.

The quality of this image is quite poor; I did my best. Not only is the scene dark, but the firing of the pistol is fogging things up with smoke. This is something that happens in real life — a big problem in the indoor gun ranges of yore — but directors often find this inconvenient and leave it out. So . . . points for realism.

At any rate, big thanks to my niece for tipping me off. And anyone with insights as to how this came to be, please fill us in. Cuz this is definitely a Benny’s sign . . . right?
