Walk into Cured Collection, the vintage and streetwear store at the mall, and there among the expected selection of sneakers, caps, and racks of sports, superhero, and band tour T-shirts, is our beloved 17th-century founder, Roger Williams. More specifically, this just released casual shirt features the iconic monument and view at Prospect Terrace on Congdon Street. (More about those shorts later.)
Turns out the Providence-born store owner, Xury Belliard, loves this town and its outdoor treasures, so about a year ago Xury (pronounced SOO-dee, rhymes with Rudy) began working with an artist, and after much tweaking, he finally had the shirt he wanted to wear. Made of a soft and breathable, cellulose-based fabric, Lyocell, and featuring mother-of-pearl buttons, the shirt is now available for $120. And yes, those shorts he is wearing were inspired by his visits to the ‘10,000 suns’ installation on South Main Street. (The shorts are not yet available.)
We first wrote about Cured Collection five years ago when he opened the store in the Arcade following his success at the Providence Flea. But Xury’s personal ambitions have always seem wrapped up in creating opportunities for others — as if his own success will be much more fun if it’s embedded in a larger creative environment. And he sees no need to leave Providence.
We can definitely have these interesting stores and interesting experiences. That’s one thing I want to do here. I want to have pop-ups and things like that, with artists and local brands . . . and show the city what we have here in terms of talent and what we can do. . . And for the people coming up and the young creatives who might not think there is an outlet for them, to show them that we do have it, and how they can create their own.
I have to add that the Cured Collection Instagram feed is among my favorites. The photography makes all those Nikes and lime green Yeezy slides look like candy and I want them. The store also carries Supreme and BAPE and other popular lines.
Store hours: Mon – Thurs: 11am to 7pm/Fri – Sat: 11am to 8pm/Sun 11am to 6pm.
I got chatting with employee Chach, a local rapper who has shirts of his own design for sale in the store as well. Chach opened for Jadakiss a while back and will be opening for the Method Man and Redman show at the Strand on August 20!
There are several different Supreme caps for sale as well as the Rhude paisley bucket.
Here’s a better look at the Roger Williams shirts.
