Trader Joe’s Now Open

We knew that anticipation for this addition to the Fox Point retail landscape was high, but folks actually started lining up at 6am (?!) Thursday morning to be the first shoppers at Trader Joe’s on South Main Street at Wickenden. I waited until the afternoon to get my pork shu mai fix and at that time the store was operating very efficiently. The line to cash out zoomed right along.

In addition to providing 80 people with employment, this market will fill a need in this area. The WPRI report shows many college age and twentysomething shoppers waiting for the doors to open. This demographic shows up in the ProJo report as well:

“There weren’t really any other grocery stores on College Hill,” said Pilar McDonald, who was one of the first through the doors, along with fellow Brown student Ben Rosenn.

“Being able to just carry my groceries from here is good,” added Rosenn.

When you have to carry your groceries home, every block matters. And it is less expensive than Whole Foods by a lot.

The organization has committed to reducing packaging waste, and through their Neighborhood Shares program, “Each of our stores across the country donates 100% of products that go unsold but remain fit to be enjoyed to local food recovery organizations, seven days a week.”

Open seven days, 8am to 9pm. Free parking.
