Trout Season Starts

Saturday marks the beginning of Trout Fishing Season so things will be hopping over at Ocean State Tackle starting Friday (noon to 7pm). Owner Dave Henault has been stocking up on sea worms, green crabs, and Berkley PowerBait and will be opening his doors early on Saturday at 4:30am. (The season officially starts at 6am.) Full indoor service has returned and Dave has a few suggestions for keeping it moving on the big day:

We still ask that simple transactions use the Express Bait Window. Using the express window with cash, Cash App and Venmo has proven to be fast and effective (both can be used to pre-order and prepay for bait, tackle and gear for expedited service).

You will have to call the store to order and check inventory as you are aware that we sell fresh and live bait and demand can exceed supply as times. Pre-orders with expedited service will ensure that eels, crabs, pogies or sea worms are reserved for you.

Fresh and live bait can be reserved with pre-order and prepayment for Same Day Only. The emphasis is on live and fresh here at Ocean State Tackle.

Sukha and Purna, Dave’s two awesome Labs, are the store’s official greeters. (Dave is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist: Sukha is Sanskrit for “happiness” and Prana means “breath, or life force.”)

Go here for Updates and FAQ from the DEM Bureau of Natural Resources. They will be stocking trout produced at their state hatcheries for opening day and throughout the 2022 fishing season, but I see no mention of the golden trout of years past.

Go here for a list of designated trout waters. There are none in Providence but a few are surprisingly close: Ten Mile River and Willett Pond are in East Providence. A few sites are listed as wheelchair accessible including Olney Pond in Lincoln Woods.

Recreational Freshwater Fishing Licenses are required of anglers fifteen (15) years of age and older. You can order online here.

Fishing season runs from April 8, 2023 to February 29, 2024.

4:30am to 7pm, Saturday, April 8, Ocean State Tackle, 430 Branch Avenue, (directions)
