Meet Author Elizabeth Rau At BotS

(5.11) Providence author Elizabeth Rau will discuss her new book, “The Good Slope: A Collection of Essays,” this Thursday at Books on the Square. Following a childhood in the Midwest, Rau moved to Providence, writing for the Providence Journal, East Side Monthly, Rhode Island Monthly, and many other publications.

Several of these essays chronicle her life here on the East Side. Familiar names like Benny’s and Fred the Barber crop up but Rau also shares a fondness for the hidden places to be found in our neighborhood green spaces like the Brown Street Park, the Baby Park on Humboldt Avenue, Witherby Park, and the one pictured here, the dog park on Waterman Street, “a tangle of trees and bushes.”

Moving, bold, and funny, this collection of essays by Elizabeth Rau captures the poignancy of ordinary life through the voices of everyday people–children, friends, neighbors, and even the mail carrier. In vivid and lyrical prose, she chronicles her childhood in the Midwest, her many years as a newspaper reporter, and, above all, her plunge into motherhood in middle age.

Meet the Author, 6pm, Thursday, May 11, BotS, 471 Angell Street, (directions)
