[Update: Event has been postponed to August 6 due to weather.] The Hope Street Merchants are throwing a block party this Saturday with live music and performances, restaurants, beers, cocktails, food trucks, makers, artists, and more. The music has been programmed by the good folks over at Askew. Here’s the schedule for what is being called “The Main Stage:”
11:15am — Fashion Show
12:15pm — Maddie McGill
1pm — SwampBirds
1:50pm — Greg Sherrod Band
2:50pm — Dan Blakeslee
3:55pm — Funky Submarine
The image here is “Hope” by Rhode Island artist Joanna Vespia. The mural was commissioned by the Summit Neighborhood Association in partnership with The Avenue Concept, with help from Not Just Snacks Restaurant and Eden Cleaners.
The mural interacts with the flora in the flowerbeds during their growth season, making the flowerbed garden appear to extend backwards in space. The mural becomes a 2D extension of the garden and the garden becomes a 3D extension of the mural.
. . . The text is a poignant ode to the iconic 1970’s illustration by Mad Peck.
You can go buy that iconic Mad Peck poster at Frog & Toad.
The peonies in front of the mural are just opening — check them out on Saturday. Follow updates on FB.
