AS220 October Galleries Open

The public is invited to an opening reception Saturday evening for the AS220 October Galleries. The shows run  through October 28. Featured in the Main Gallery are the finely executed pen-and-ink drawings of Rhode Island artist, and RISD alum, Jennifer Daltry. It can be a little depressing viewing the body of work that Daltry managed to create in “Isolation,” when compared to your loaf of sourdough bread. Even so, these images will resonate:

Quiet contemplation from the Covid lock down inspires this series of drawings. Themes on calmness and loneliness emerge from isolation and in between moments of anticipation and solitude.

And Jennifer does like cats, tuxedo cats in particular. The pieces are small, drawing you in and forcing you to peer closely at the insanely detailed shading and cross-hatching, executed with a steady hand and the finest nib in the box.

Also in the Main Gallery is Kelly McCullough’s “Terra”:

A series of mixed media illustrations exploring the fascination for the solar system and reflections on climate change, pushing the boundaries of traditional landscapes.

Oil paintings in elaborate gilt frames are not a common sight in the AS220 galleries; I like them a lot.

Opening reception, 5pm to 7pm, Saturday, October 7, AS220, 115 Empire Street, (directions)
