URI Alum Loberti To Star In Netflix Drama

Rhode Island native Aria Mia Loberti, URI class of 2020, is set to star as Marie-Laure Leblanc in the Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See coming November 2nd. Despite having no theater background, this extraordinary young woman simply willed herself into the part. From the CBS Sunday Morning profile:

She had never acted before, but Aria Mia Loberti recorded a simple audition video after hearing about a Netflix casting call. The part was for the heroine in an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr, “All the Light We Cannot See.” Loberti, like the main character, Marie-Laure LeBlanc, is blind.

I’m sure we will be hearing more about her performance once the series has been released, but the folks down at the University of Rhode have been singing her praises since she was selected for a Fulbright award! Just look at her academic credentials.

After a lengthy, rigorous application process, Aria Mia Loberti ‘20 has been selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Award for graduate study at Royal Holloway, University of London! Aria is a graduating triple major in Philosophy, Communication Studies, and Political Science, with minors in Rhetoric and Ancient Greek, as well.

Through her Fulbright Award, Aria will pursue a one-year MRes in Rhetoric at Royal Holloway, University of London.

So we can throw the word “disability” right out the window. The school ran a profile of Loberti in 2020 when London was all in the future. In her response to “What’s next for you?” the word “acting” is nowhere to be found. And she wanted to brag on her guide dog:

My Guide Dog, Ingrid, is also graduating from URI with me. In addition to training intensively for two years to become a working Guide Dog, Ingrid also has learned several words in Ancient Greek, knows over 100 words and phrases in English, and can find sixteen URI buildings on command.

Born and raised in Johnston, Loberti was home-schooled from the third grade on. The Johnston Sunrise has the tale of their public school system’s depressing lack of vision. (Maybe the Lobertis should open a school.)

All of Rhode Island should be hugely proud of this young woman. Follow her on IG.

(Aria’s costars include Mark Ruffalo (seen here) and Hugh Laurie. Not too shabby. CBS video here.)

Aria Mia Loberti earned a degree from the URI Harrington School of Communication.
