Maven’s Deli Now Open

Yes, Maven’s Delicatessen will be selling black and white cookies Sunday when restaurateur Jason Sugarman opens the doors to his passion project, a real Jewish deli here in his home state. And while we have other smaller delis around town with counter service, Maven’s is a restaurant with table seating for 100 plus, as well as the stools at the counter. The menu is up now and it is beyond comprehensive: choose from lox, whitefish, blintzes, potato latkes, knishes, and a corned beef Reuben that will be available all day. And of course, bagels with schmear . . . and matzo ball soup just in time for the winter. Wash it down with a Dr. Brown’s cream soda . . . beer and wine are also for sale.

Under “coming soon” are dinner plates including brisket, liver and onions, and schnitzel. Updates and tempting photos on FB.

Gail Ciampa writes in the ProJo:

Maven’s will not be a kosher deli. Sugarman wants to have his Reuben sandwich on the menu and that is not negotiable to him. The sandwich, made with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on rye bread, cannot be kosher because it combines meat and dairy.

Thank you Mr. Sugarman. And here’s a familiar face: The Boston Globe reports:

Sugarman’s partner is Jamie D’Oliveira, who will also serve as the deli’s culinary director. He was the previous owner of Red Stripe and Mills Tavern, and has worked with Sugarman’s father, who franchised Jonny Rockets, for years. Opening Maven’s “is [Sugarman’s] childhood dream coming true,” chuckled D’Oliveira.

As to the interior decor?

Maven’s co-owner is Sugarman’s wife, Lauren. She grew up in Cranston and attended the Rhode Island School of Design. She’s picked out all the art on the deep blue walls — old black-and-white photos of delis, as well as her own creations.

I need that Reuben.

Hours: Sunday thru Thursday, 7am to 9pm/ Friday & Saturday, 7am to 10pm. Breakfast all day.

(Maven’s is just over the line in Pawtucket in the plaza with Rasoi and Wildflour.)

Opens Sunday, December 3, Maven’s Deli, 727 East Avenue, Pawtucket (directions)

And the neon sign is gorgeous.
